[New post] ‘Rural Vibrancy’ by Cathy Shull to hang in The Orphanage in March

Although Shull has lived all over the United States, her roots are in Morgan County where she was born. She is a passionate rural advocate as evidenced by her consulting business which works with nonprofits, small business and government in rural Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Nebraska. Shull also owns an online rural event guide called Discover Rural that promotes events in Colorado, Nebraska, and Wyoming. Shull also is executive director of Progressive 15, a group of people from 15 counties in northeast Colorado who advocate for policies that benefit rural Colorado.
As she traveled the area, Shull was struck by the beauty of the plains landscape and started taking photos with her iPhone. Sometimes she would pull over and stop, sometimes not, sometimes she just stopped in the middle of the road. But always, she would share the photos with her friends who started asking her for prints.

Never one to let an entrepreneurial opportunity pass her by, Shull started a small business which she called "Rural Drive by Photos from the Road" and signed up with a website that allowed her to sell her photos online. Next came a better camera and computer software to help her manipulate her photographic files. She started experimenting with what she saw in the landscape and what she saw in her mind and combining those two ideas on the computer. She views the product as "photo art."
"Not all my photos are manipulated, some beauty stands on its own," she said.
Her photography started as a personal hobby as she traveled rural roads around the U.S. for her clients.
"Rural is all over the world and some of my greatest landscapes are along coastlines" Shull said. "I do mostly landscapes, plants, trees, flowers and for some reason I want my animals to be colorful. I rarely do people, but barns and bridges do fascinate me."
Shull's show runs from, March 4 through April 8 at The Orphanage, 300 S. Main Street, Yuma. Hours for the exhibition are Tuesday through Saturday, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Sunday from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m. and closed Mondays. The opening reception for Rural Vibrancy will be on Saturday, March 4 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. refreshments will be served.
