Harry Redknapp has revealed that he tried to sign Luis Suarez for Tottenham ahead of Liverpool, but ended up with free transfers instead.
Suarez ended up being one of the finest strikers of his generation for Liverpool, Barcelona and Uruguay, and also helped Atletico Madrid to a LaLiga title in 2020/21.
Emerging at Ajax after leaving his home country to pursue a career in Europe, Suarez's goalscoring was off the charts in the Eredivisie, leading to a move to Anfield in January 2011.
The rest was history as Suarez tore up the Premier League before taking over Europe with Barca, but he could have had a very different career path.
Asked by talkSPORT's Laura Woods if there were any big deals Redknapp missed out on during a storied managerial career, Suarez was the one that stood out.
"Loads over the years, so many it's crazy," he said. "You think you've got one done and you're sitting around late at night trying to get it done and it doesn't come off.
"When you're in a relegation battle and you're struggling and you know you need one or two or you've got no chance, or if you're trying to make the top four, that's when you really need it.
"I tried to get Luis Suarez at Tottenham but couldn't get it done and then the chairman Daniel [Levy] let me have a couple of free transfers instead.
"When it's over it's quite a relief to be honest, you think 'the windows shut, let's get on with it, let's get the best out of what we've got'."
With the winter window closed and Suarez gone, Redknapp had to wait until the summer for the free striker signing of Emmanuel Adebayor, as well as Louis Saha the following winter, but neither quite hit the heights of two-time European Golden shoe winner Suarez.
