The University of Northern Colorado football program earned national recognition in 2022 for all the wrong reasons.
Players, their families and former staff accused former coach Ed McCaffrey of creating a toxic culture leading to the departure of more than three dozen student-athletes in the 2021-22 offseason and the termination of assistants before the 2021 season. They made claims about poor preparation, a lack of investment and shoddy communication. Some alleged potential NCAA violations.
UNC Athletic Director Darren Dunn denied the allegations and said in January that university officials believed McCaffrey and his staff did their best to operate equitably. Two months later, a review did not find NCAA violations. The university again expressed its support for McCaffrey.
This season, the team finished 3-8 overall and 2-6 in conference play. Northern Colorado announced McCaffrey's termination less than 48 hours after a 45-21 loss at Eastern Washington.
Players, alumni and former staff said promises of a better culture, communication and more significant preparation never lasted.
Many within Northern Colorado football and the Weld County community expressed relief at McCaffrey's termination, including a former offensive coordinator and a former team captain.
Former Brigham Young assistant and Southern Utah head coach Ed Lamb will replace McCaffrey.
