Voters in the town of Fleming are considering moving their municipal elections, currently held in April, to November in conjunction with the general election.
Coordinating the town's elections with the November election could save the town money. Fleming would pay only a share of Logan County's costs for printing ballots, rather than having to print its own, and would not have to pay for election workers to man a polling place for in-person voting at the community center.
Coordinating the election with the general election may also make it easier for voters to keep track of election day, and therefore increase turnout. In a town with a population of less than 500 people, every single vote truly can make a difference, as races can easily be decided by only a handful of votes. Data show that mail-in ballots, used for Colorado's general elections, can also improve participation, at least in part because of the extended time frame for voting.
And not to cast any aspersions on those who have run Fleming's elections in the past, but coordinating the election with the trained professionals in the Logan County elections department who bring a wealth of experience in conducting fair and secure elections should only increase confidence in the results.
In short, we agree wholeheartedly with State Sen. Jerry Sonnenberg, who said at a recent presentation that he could think of no argument against Question 2P. We see only upsides to this move, and recommend Fleming voters check "Yes" on their ballots.
