Windsor officials are encouraging residents to be mindful of how they dispose of yard waste to protect waterways and keep roads safe.
Decomposing leaves, excess fertilizer and other trash and debris can harm local water systems by increasing excess phosphorous after flowing into storm drains, according to a town news release. The excess phosphorous can cause algae blooms, like the one that required a temporary closure of Windsor Lake this summer, and poor downstream quality.
Residents may face a $70 fine for clogged storm drains or ice buildup, the release states. Property owners are required to maintain adjacent sidewalks, curbs and gutters so they don't endanger the public, according to the town code.
Excess waste swept into the street can also lead to street sweeper clogs, which may require expensive repairs.
Windsor has 20 sweeping districts, sweeping each area at least four times a year or as needed. The town sweeps the downtown business district 16 times a year before businesses open in the morning. During leaf season, areas with larger, mature trees are swept several times a week. An interactive map and schedule is available at windsorgov.com/StreetSweeping.
Sweeping is usually underway from April 1 to Nov. 30, but may take place from December to March if temperatures are above freezing. Residents are also asked to keep trash cans, vehicles and sports equipment away from the street to assist in sweeping.
Organic debris such as leaves, twigs, branches and grass clippings can be disposed of at the town's Fall Clean-Up from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, Oct. 14 at the Public Services Facility, 922 N. 15th St. For more information about the event, go to windsorgov.com/WindsorFallCleanUp22.
Windsor utility customers can also request a one-time annual reimbursement of up to $10 for responsible yard waste recycling at local organics disposal facilities including A1 Organics and Ewing Landscape Materials any time during the year.
