What is Friday Night Lights? This event is where the Oxford Area High School community comes together in support of our varsity football team. There are many elements that all make up Friday Night Lights.
The crowd attending this event consists of family members of players and students, community members, football team, cheerleaders, and most importantly the student body. In the stands, there is a dedicated area where mainly upperclassmen sit, referred to as the "student section". We all get together on Friday nights, at 7 p.m. for kickoff in the high school football stadium.
Most people in attendance do things to support the team, like participating in the nightly theme. We have done themes such as "Jersey night", where people got to wear their jersey from their favorite team. "Western night" where everyone dressed up in their cowboy boots, hats, and flannels. "The USA" theme wearing red, white, and blue, which was done in tribute to 9/11. Hawaiian where attendees wore their tropical gear. Our upcoming theme for the Homecoming game is going to be our school colors maroon and white.
OAHS student Olivia Peterson gave some insight into what goes on in the student section. The one word she used to describe it is "loud." The people use their voices to cheer on our football team and show spirit and support during the night out. She said, "they scream chants like DEFENSE and I BELIEVE WE WILL WIN."
Fellow student Dirk Carr talked about what Friday Night Lights means to him. Dirk said, "I go to dress up and show my support for the boys on the team."
He loves seeing friends and cheering the team on. He also gets to branch out and meet people from the opposing side. Dirk said, "the student section is very chaotic." The chaos is out of excitement for the team.
The night is wrapped up with a celebration, whether we win or lose. After the game, most of the football team heads to Bravo's to enjoy pizza after their hard-fought game. This year, Friday Night Lights is bittersweet for the class of 23' as we realize with each game, we are one step closer to the end of our high school journey.
