Liverpool's need for a midfielder stepped up on Wednesday night after an injury suffered by Jordan Henderson.
The midfielder was replaced in the 71st minute of the 2-1 victory over Newcastle United in what appeared to be a tactical change from Jurgen Klopp, however speaking post-match, the Reds' boss confirmed that wasn't the case.
Henderson suffered an innocuous looking injury against Newcastle on Monday night
Henderson will be a big miss if he's set for a prolonged spell on the sidelines
He said: "Hendo is injured. He got a hamstring which is not helpful. It was that serious that he could not carry on. It was not a tactical change."
While it remains to be seen how long Henderson could be sidelined for, it's certainly stepped up the club's efforts to recruit a replacement before the transfer window slams shut.
One player who has been linked with a move to the club, as well as moves to Chelsea, Arsenal, and Atletico Madrid, is Aston Villa star Douglas Luiz.
The 24-year-old Brazilian has spent the last three years at Villa Park after leaving Manchester City, and it seems that a move to one of the Premier League's top sides could be a possibility.
It's reported that Liverpool have made an opening offer of £20million to sign the midfielder who has less than 12 months remaining on his contract at Villa Park.
Addressing Luiz's future, Steven Gerrard admits that his situation is uncertain.

Gerrard admitted that the situation with Luiz is far from ideal
Asked about his plans, Gerrard said: "I'm not in control of that.
"There are more than two people in control of that but I'm certainly not one of them.
"That will be Douglas, that will be his agent's decision as to what happens around that. I'd like to keep him because he's a fantastic player. I've made that abundantly clear.
"We are not in a position where we need to lose our top players, but at the same time, Douglas has got a year to go, and it is one of those really touchy situations where the club have to do what is best for the club and not necessarily what's best for me."
Liverpool have also been linked with moves for Jude Bellingham from Borussia Dortmund, however it's highly likely that this move will be pursued more probably next summer.
