The extremely popular short-form video hosting service TikTok is looking to incorporate games into the app.
According to Tech Crunch, TikTok is partnering with developers such as Voodoo, Nitro Games, FRVR, Aim Lab, and Lotum. The result of this partnership is expected to be HTML5 minigames that you can play within the app.
These types of games tend to be very simple and are usually meant for passing time or occupying yourself between tasks.
From the creator's side, you will soon be able to see options to link videos to a minigame on the screen before you publish a video. This feature is currently being soft-launched across the globe and might not be available everywhere immediately.
The games that are currently available are:
- Basketball FRVR (FRVR)
- Tap the Difference (Lotm)
- Peek a Who (Nitro)
- Pride Run (Voodoo)
- Influencer Run (Voodoo)
- Space Destroyer (Nitro)
- Mr. Aim Lab's Nightmare (Aim Lab)
These games are currently available for free and it is likely being done to gauge user interest. But who knows how long that will last.
All that said, this isn't TikTok's first brush with gaming. It had previously introduced Disco Loco 3D in 2021. This was an endless runner made in collaboration with Zynga. You collect dance moves and challenge your friends.
With these games, TikTok has joined a collection of apps that have been experimenting with gaming.
Facebook for instance, has been providing games of various levels of engagement to players for years. (Farmville, anyone?) Snapchat has Snap Games, and even Netflix is looking to get in on the action.
