The Colorado State Patrol advises motorists to avoid the dangers of trailer sway by taking preventative methods.
Drivers frightened by a camper, boat or trailer swiftly moving side to side on the road have good reason behind their fears, according to a Colorado State Patrol news release, which said swaying trailers can turn deadly.
The deadly factor of trailer sway makes it crucial to drive responsibly and safely hitch vehicles, distributing the weight on the trailer or camper properly. But one of the biggest mistakes motorists make is not paying enough attention to the weight distribution of what's being towed, according to the release
"You want to see a flat plane between your vehicle and your trailer or camper," Major Rob Marone, District 5 Commander of the Colorado State Patrol. "If you see that what your towing is tipping forward toward the hitch or back away from the hitch, this indicates less traction and more swaying."
The Colorado State Patrol urges front loading by placing more weight before the axle or closer to the vehicle in front of the trailer's wheels, which helps evenly distribute the weight between the vehicle and what its towing.
If a person is pulling a camper, place heavier items lower to the ground in the camper and lighter items in the overhead cabinets to help keep a lower center of gravity, the release said.
Lastly, the agency reminds those hitting the road that the bigger the trailer the more sensitive it is to the wind. Speed also is a factor when pulling trailers or campers, meaning the faster a person drives, the more it will sway.
Driver slower and allow other motorists to pass if safe and possible, according to the release.
