Greeley police advise a shopping center is safe after a bomb threat made by a 56-year-old man resulted in an evacuation Monday afternoon.
Around 1:54 p.m., police responded to a bomb threat and disturbance at Canvas Credit Union located in the Bittersweet Shopping Center in the 3500 block of 10th Street.
The Weld County Regional Communications Center received multiple calls about a man entering the credit union and yelling that he had a bomb with him, according to a news release from Greeley police. The man, 56-year-old Jeffery Kelley, then voluntarily exited the business with the suspected explosive item before setting it down in the street.
Shortly after, Greeley police located Kelley nearby the scene and took him into custody without incident. Officers booked Jeffery Kelley into the Weld County Jail for suspicion of one count of a false report of explosives and three counts of menacing.
Greeley Fire Department, City of Greeley Streets and EMS units assisted in evacuating and securing the shopping center, the release said. Police also activated the Greeley/Weld Bomb Squad to evaluate the potentially explosive item.
The bomb squad concluded the package was not explosive and declared the area safe. The shopping center reponed to the public at 3:30 p.m.
There is no ongoing threat to the community at this time, according to police.
