Second-ranked Fleming football is ready to prove it's one of the best 6-man teams in the state this year, and Saturday afternoon's season-opener was a step in the right direction.
When the Wildcats hosted North Park over the weekend, they left little doubt throughout the course of the game as they put up plenty of points on their visitors early and didn't let them gain much ground in the 45-12 finish.
Fleming got the ball rolling quickly, putting up 12 points in the first quarter before adding 13 more in the second. North Park managed to respond with six points of its own in the second frame, but that wasn't nearly enough to stop Fleming's charge. The Wildcats put up 20 more points in the third quarter before completely taking their feet off the gas pedal to ride off into a strong first showing in 2022.
The Wildcats displayed their offensive versatility as senior quarterback Braylen Feather collected 178 passing yards on 10 completions while throwing two touchdowns. Senior Harry Harms (64 yards), junior Wyatt Cochran (62 yards) and senior Blake Feather (52 yards) were all on the receiving end of those passes as Harms caught both touchdown passes.
The Wildcats also excelled on the run, thanks in large part to senior Nolan Japp's 117 rushing yards and two touchdowns. Senior Kolten Houser scored twice more as Blake Feather added a touchdown of his own. Blake Feather and Japp led the defensive charge with eight tackles apiece as Houser added seven more as Braylen Feather intercepted four passes from North Park.
Now, the Wildcats will prepare for an even tougher matchup against Idalia — which dropped out of the rankings after sitting at No. 5 in the preseason polls — on Friday. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Fleming.
