The Sterling Police Department's annual Community Appreciate Day is returning for the seventh year on Tuesday.
This year's event is being held in conjunction with National Night Out, an annual community-building campaign held around the U.S. to promote partnerships between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
The SPD event will run from 5 to 7 p.m. Aug. 2 at the Prairie Park Sunflower Pavilion area. In addition to a meet and greet with the SPD team and demonstrations involving squad cars and other department equipment, the celebration will include free hot dogs and hamburgers with chips. The department will also offer bicycle registrations for those who ride their bikes to the park, child ID kits, recruitment for the Explorer Post No. 332, information about the Neighborhood Watch program, and a presentation featuring K-9 officer Vader in action with his handler.
The Logan County Sheriff's Office is also launching a National Night Out celebration this year, with activities planned from 1 to 6 p.m. Tuesday at the Logan County Fairgrounds. The celebration will include free barbecue, cornhole, Bingo and a coloring contest, as well as a demonstration with K-9 Kane and a meet and greet with K-9 Nyx. Visitors will be able to see first responder vehicles and sign up for prizes and giveaways.
