Greeley's police and fire department are partnering with Vitalant to host their first community blood drive event to help avoid blood shortages during the summer months.
Vitalent will host the blood drive at three locations from June 13-19 to support the needs of patients in northern Colorado, according to a news release from the blood service provider. Community members can give blood at:
- Vitalant's Greeley Donation Center, located at 1831 65th Avenue, throughout the whole week during center hours.
- The Greeley Police Department from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. June 13 and 14.
- The Greeley Fire Department 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. June 15.
Vitalant is encouraging all those eligible to make plans to donate blood during the summer months, a time when donations decrease, to help ensure patients receive lifesaving transfusions.
Every two seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion, according to the release.
Because of the pandemic, hundreds of blood drives have been canceled over the past few years, which caused strain on the regular blood donations needed to avoid blood shortages.
"We rely on blood drive partners like the Greeley Police and Fire Departments for their support in encouraging the community to donate blood for patients in need," Vitalant Mountain Division Vice President Anne Burtchaell said. "Donations tend to drop during the summer months, and it's important blood drives like this happen to ensure every patient need can be met as it arises."
The Greeley donation center also will have giveaways and a food truck for all donors to enjoy June 17-18.
Vitalant urges those interested in donating to schedule an appointment by going to vitalant.org/GreeleyPoliceFireBloodDrive or calling 877-25-VITAL.
