The Sterling Tigers capitalized on their second chance Saturday, playing Bayfield at Butch Butler Field in Greeley to keep their 3A state playoff run alive.
Early on, it looked like the Wolverines would be forcing the Tigers out as they took a four-run lead. However, an RBI from freshman Caysen Bamford tied the game at 6 apiece and forced an extra inning.
In the bottom of the eighth, with the bases loaded and one out, junior Jake Gordon stepped to the plate and knocked one to center field, sending senior Dylan DiOrio home to end the game with a 7-6 Sterling victory.
The win sent the fourth-seeded Tigers on to a final four matchup against No. 2 University at 2:30 p.m. Friday. Sterling was 0-2 against the Bulldogs during the regular season, with the second matchup going to extra innings. The Tigers will need to find a way to shut down University's slugger Korey Koehler to remain in the double-elimination tournament.
A win would send Sterling on to the first of possibly two championship games, facing either No. 1 Eaton or No. 3 Lutheran at 11 a.m. Saturday.
All remaining games for the 3A state baseball championships will be played at Butch Butler Field.
