One punch was all Gervonta Davis needed to end his rivalry with Rolly Romero and retain his secondary WBA lightweight title on Saturday night.
'Tank' blasted Romero with a massive left hand late in the sixth round that sent the previously unbeaten 26-year-old face-first into the ropes before he hit the canvas at the sold-out Barclays Center in Brooklyn.
One shot was all Davis needed to defend his belt
Romero managed to beat the count but despite climbing back to his feet was deemed to be in no fit state to continue by referee Dave Fields who waved off the 12-round lightweight title bout at 2:49 of the sixth frame.
Before the stoppage, Davis found himself in a highly competitive and potentially dangerous fight. Romero led 48-47 on one scorecard at the time of the stoppage. The Baltimore native was ahead on two cards, 49-46 and 48-47, through five rounds.
During his post-fight interview, Davis claimed he didn't even put power on the shot that finished the fight and suggested his opponent ran into it akin to Manny Pacquiao's knockout loss against Juan Manuel Marquez.
"The crazy thing is I didn't even throw that hard," Davis told Jim Gray.
"I just threw it. He just ran right into it. Something like when Pacquiao got caught by what's his name? Yeah, I ain't even throw it hard."

It was expected that Davis would become the most sort after free agent in after his fight with Romero, as it was the last on his contract with Floyd Mayweather's promotional outlet.
Mayweather's absence from fight week and fight night suggested that Davis was about to strike out on his own but the man himself said otherwise at his post-fight press conference.
After fielding questions from reporters Davis embraced Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe and confirmed he is going nowhere.
"Still Mayweather Promotions, baby," he said with a smile.
A clearly delighted Ellebre laughed as he asked his fighter to 'say it one more time' before both men exited the stage after another successful night at the office.
