Ralf Rangnick has admitted he doesn't know who will be Manchester United captain next term, insisting that the decision will lie with incoming head coach Erik ten Hag.
Harry Maguire is the current occupant of the armband, however the England defender has come in for criticism in recent months for his inconsistent form.
Maguire is the current captain but has come in for criticism
While Maguire certainly isn't solely to blame for United's poor form this season as they accept that their top four hopes are over, there's a feeling that a new skipper could reinvigorate the team at Old Trafford.
Ten Hag will take charge in the summer and, according to interim boss Rangnick, his recommendation would be that the captain is elected by his teammates.
Responding to a question about the role, Rangnick replied: "I understand your question, but again I think it doesn't make sense because you don't know which kind of players will be here, what the group will look like.
"I can only tell what I have done in the past when I was the head coach or the manager, because in Germany it's called 'match kapitän', so the captain of the team.
"I strongly believe that the captain should be elected by the team because he's called the team manager, and we always did that.
"We always had a board of four or five players, we called it the 'spielkapitän', elected by the players, the player with the highest amount of votes was the team captain at the end.
Rangnick has urged United to allow the players to elect their own skipper
However it's Ten Hag who will have final say on who takes the armband next year
"That's how I did it, I know that not a lot of head coaches do it that way."
Responding to a comment that that's the approach that Pep Guardiola takes at Manchester City, Rangnick added: "Yeah, so that's what I would do if I was still the manager next season, but I'm not, so that is something for Erik to decide."
It's set to be a busy summer for United, and according to talkSPORT's Alex Crook, it's going to take a mammoth effort to get the club back on track.
He said: "This group of Manchester United players is the worst group of Manchester United players that I've seen in my lifetime.
Ronaldo has cut a frustrated figure at times this season
"They've got no character, they've got no desire, they've got no commitment, they've got no tactical awareness. It just gets worse and worse.
"Manchester City are light years ahead of us, Liverpool are light years ahead of us. Chelsea, who actually aren't pulling up too many trees this season, are lighty ears ahead of us.
"Arsenal are in danger of overtaking United because they've got the recruitment right, they've got the right people making the right decisions, they've got good characters in the dressing room. Everything that Manchester United don't have.
"I don't like to single out individuals, because they're all equally culpable, but Harry Maguire, England's Harry Maguire, has been appalling now for two, maybe three, years.
Maguire will have a real point to prove during the summer months
"He should be nowhere near the England squad. He should be nowhere near this Manchester United team.
"But look at the body language – they're coming off the pitch, there's an acceptance, there's a grimace from Ralph Rangnick their heads are bowed, they're a disgrace."
