The parents of a 3-year-old Denver boy who fatally shot himself are under investigation for negligent child abuse causing death.
Celina Duran, 39, the boy's mother, was arrested Thursday on suspicion of child abuse – negligently causing death, according to a police news release. The boy's father, Manuel Lopez, 34, remains at large.
At around 5:20 p.m. April 17, the boy was taken by a private vehicle to a local hospital suffering from a gunshot wound, police said. He died on April 22.
"At this stage of the investigation, it appears the shooting was accidental and self-inflicted," police said.
The shooting happened in a parked vehicle in the 1700 block of South Pecos Street.
As part of an ongoing investigation, arrest warrants were issued for the parents. The district attorney's office will determine the filing of charges in the case.
In Fort Collins, parents turned themselves in to authorities on Friday in connection to the shooting death of their 6-year-old child. Roy Summers died on April 10 after an accidental self-inflicted shooting, police said.
Rosinetta Mackall, 40, Roy's mother, is accused of leaving an unsecured weapon in an area her children had access to, police said. Ron Matthews, Mackall's husband, was not present at the home or living there at the time of the accident, but police alleged Matthews "lied and tampered with evidence of their conversation" when he was questioned about his interactions with Mackall surrounding the incident.
Mackall is charged with felony child abuse and misdemeanor unlawful storage of a firearm and Matthews is charged with felony attempt to influence a public servant and misdemeanor tampering with physical evidence. They were being held on Friday at the Larimer County Jail.
