Life is beautiful and so much fun, but still, it can get tough. Sometimes we are so happy, we are walking on clouds, other times well… not so much. Whether we are celebrating our success, no matter how "small" it is, or we are trying to pull ourselves together after a rough day; we all deserve some love. Even if that love comes in a cup, in the form of a soul-warming coffee. And we all need a place where we can go to with a good company, or even just by ourselves, to relax or to catch up with some work.
At three locations in Budapest, that cover some of the busiest and also prettiest areas in the city, there are such places: the little cafés called Madal. The first spot opened in 2013 and since then they decided to grow the business and opened two more places. The cafés are always filled with costumers, including students who want to stir up their regular routines, groups of friends who want to catch up with each other, and tourists who would like to truly immerse in the city.
Madal cafés have a very special atmosphere; lively but still calming. Maybe it's the music they play, maybe the people who work there, maybe the customers, or maybe a mix of all these features but there is always such a cosy vibe filling the place. The first time I went there I felt like I already knew everyone. By now, I truly know my way around there, I've met a lot of amazing people in these cafés. There is a great number of regular costumers too which shows that people feel great while being there, they have good experiences and they want to go back from time to time.
They serve speciality coffee so if you grab your daily dose of caffeine there, quality is guaranteed. Talking about quality, they roast their own coffee too. Apart from the well-known and regular coffee/tea orders, some special kinds are offered as well like different flavoured chai lattes and matcha teas. There are also seasonal drinks you can try around the year; iced versions, affogato and so on. And what would go better with a delicious cup of coffee or tea than some equally delicious pastries and desserts? What's even better is that many of these little snacks, actually the majority of them, are vegan. So, they are good for you and for our planet too. Moreover, you can find gluten-free desserts as well, so at Madal they really think about everyone.
If someone would like to pick up some new skills, several courses are offered, for example latte art courses, called 'art' for a reason. By attending a course you can combine work with pleasure. While learning new skills and gaining some valuable experience in the field, you can spend each day in a very friendly and dynamic environment.
At truly great cafés or restaurants, it is not just the taste of the foods and drinks that matters. It is the whole experience. Professionals often say that we eat with our eyes first, at Madal cafés they definitely take this into consideration. Every drink is crafted with care and love.
Prices range from 490 Ft to 1190 Ft, depending on the drink of choice and whether you would like to make any alterations or not, since at Madal costumers can ask for plant-based milks instead of the regular kind. Moreover, every 10th drink is free. Who would want to skip such a bargain?
Nevertheless, by buying some coffee at Madal, one supports a (not so) small business, which is an amazing thing to do. Especially now, after the pandemic. Every industry has felt its effects, but this is particularly true to the catering industry and tourism. Therefore, sometimes enjoying a cup of coffee at small, local café shops will make people's day a bit more special than usual and will also help out the business; it is a win-win situation. So, grab some friends and spend some quality time together at a cozy place, over a delicious coffee. Costumers can also go to Madal with their four-legged friends, they are very welcome and, for sure, will receive some love.
Visiting and trying out one of the, or all of the, Madal cafés is definitely worth it. The flavours, the latte art, the music, or the overall vibe will, for sure, make your day. That's why Madal is even recognised in foreign countries as one of the best cafés you can find in Budapest, just check out these articles published in Vogue (https://www.vogue.com/article/best-coffee-and-cafes-in-budapest) and CNN (https://edition.cnn.com/travel/article/budapest-coffee/index.html). So, if you have a spare few minutes or hours on hand, go visit one of the spots. You won't regret it.
