Liam Smith stopped Jessie Vargas in the tenth round of a thrilling fight at Madison Square Garden on Saturday night.
The Brit proved he still has much to offer at the age of 33 with the victory on the undercard of Katie Taylor vs Amanda Serrano.
It was a great win for Smith
The fight began with an entertaining opener as the pair got up close and personal straight away, exchanging hooks and uppercuts from the off.
This pattern continued into round two as Vargas initially showed little-to-no ring rust despite the fact he'd been out of action for over two years.
Smith suffered a cut over his right eye in the third as his opponent appeared to get the better of the early action.
However, the Brit continued marching forward and pushed his American foe back against the ropes throughout round four.
The fifth was another positive session for Smith as Vargas seemed tired and soaked up more punishment on the ropes.
Smith and Vargas went to war in New York
As they reached the halfway point, Smith had certainly seized control of the contest and was breaking Vargas down, though he refused to wilt.
The American appeared briefly hurt by a body shot in round seven with Smith dominating the action.
Vargas had no answer for the Brit's impressive work rate in the eighth either and complained about his physicality at the end of the session.
Smith hurt Vargas again midway through round nine, but the wounded boxer continued to fire back and prevented the referee from jumping in.
He could not hold him off forever though and the end came in the very next round.
Smith nailed Vargas once more up against the ropes and Steve Willis mercifully called a halt to the fight, crowning Smith the victory by tenth-round stoppage.
