I was so happy to see the prominent placement of the article in the Greeley Tribune on April 27 announcing Larry Pottorff's retirement from North Range Behavioral Health. It is not possible to describe Larry's contribution to our community over the past 40 years in a single article; or in a book, for that matter.
I have known Larry professionally for 38 of the 40 years he has been with North Range Behavioral Health (formerly known as Weld Mental Health) and am privileged to call him my boss now. Larry's commitment to advocating for persons seeking mental health care has permeated his entire career and when he took on the role of administrator of our mental health center he took both his compassion and enthusiasm along with his clinical skill to the office, to the state government in Denver and to our community.
His sensitivity to the needs of the chronically mentally ill has been a driving force to the continued expansion of services for those who have so much difficulty accepting and asking for help. Larry's steady hand on the tiller of the organization, along with the support of the board of directors and colleagues, is the reason that NRBH has the reputation for being the best managed mental health center in the state, as evidenced by numerous investigative articles and reports.
No one person could fully describe all of the good Larry has brought to others' lives during his remarkable career as a clinician, an organizer and as an administrator. Larry, himself, has humbly told of being stopped in the hallway or on the street by someone wishing to tell him of the impact his deeds or words in the past has influenced another person's present or future.
Nevertheless, most people who were positively touched by his career, life and work are likely unaware of the difference he has made in their lives.
We will all miss him, but we wish him the best and hope to carry on the culture of caring compassion that he modeled for us. I think he would wish for that as a tribute to his decades of service.
