Advantage to the early starters. The wind got up in the afternoon and made an already challenging golf course harder. 5 players share the overnight lead in Mexico and unsurprisingly world number 2 Jon Rahm took advantage of the excellent early conditions and is in that 5 way tie.
Later starters certainly felt the weather with PGA Tour winners Abraham Ancer, Tony Finau and Carlos Ortiz all struggling. An exciting day 2 awaits and FanTeam have just the contest for it.
FanTeam have created a Day 2 Mexico Open contest for us to enjoy. €2 buy-in with €600 prize pool. Contests start 29 April, 13.45BST 14.45CET.
Day 2 satellite contests are running side by side with the regular contest and users can enter for €3 and be in with a chance of winning tickets to our PGA Championship monster contest in 3 weeks.
ROUND 1 STATS
STROKES GAINED ON APPROACH
I feel like I talk about this every week right now and here we are again. It is crucial to be gaining shots on approach here as you will have a huge advantage on the field and the golfers dropping shots because they are finding those deep green side bunkers.
- Aaron Wise
- C.T. Pan
- Seung-Yol Nuh
- Sangmoon Bae
- Brendon Todd
STROKES GAINED TEE TO GREEN
You need a good all round game around this golf course due to the length of it and the deep bunkers that guard the greens. Being top 5 in this category come the end of the week should see you near the top of the leaderboard.
- Gary Woodland
- Jon Rahm
- Charles Howell
- Aaron Wise
- Satoshi Kodaria
DRIVING DISTANCE
The Mexico Open is played on the very long Vidanta resort course. This course has been reduced from a par 73 to a par 71 for this tournament so being long off the tee is a huge advantage, especially on the drivable par 4.
- Jon Rahm
- Trey Mullinax
- Danny Lee
- Cameron Champ
- Aaron Rai
I would take a look at tee times before selecting your teams tomorrow, as this course played much easier in the morning compared to the afternoon wave. The wind got up slightly in the afternoon session on day one and it affected scoring so it's certainly worth monitoring.
