Have you ever wondered how great it would be to live the IKEA experience in a restaurant? Do you want to eat something good, but do not know what and how to cook? Do you like to cook but hate the preparation part? Or are you just bored of normal restaurants and want to try something new? If the answer is yes (for all or any of the questions) then I know a place for you. Budapest Makery, where you make yourself a great meal from fantastic ingredients.
Budapest Makery is located in Dob Street. It was opened in 2017 and the restaurant attracts not only tourists but locals as well. Before coming to the place, you must reserve a 'table' online, and you are given a 2-hour-long timeslot to spend in the restaurant. Makery is a remarkable place for teambuilding, rendezvous, friends, and family gatherings as well.
Budapest Makery is part of a franchise which is present in three cities in Europe: Vienna, Bratislava, and Budapest. It is a DIY "upside-down restaurant, where guests cook for themselves and happily pay for it" (Makery.com). The main idea is that you reserve a table, choose a dish from the menu at least 24 hours before the reservation (or else you can only choose from a simplified menu on spot), arrive on time and here comes the twist. You get the ingredients and a tablet, which shows the instructions step by step, plus a place where you can prepare your own dishes together.
I visited the restaurant with my sister, and I have to say: we both loved being here. The interior – the industrial style of furnishing really makes the place look cool – is welcoming and youthful, waiters and waitresses are all nice and helpful. All the ingredients were fresh and prime, all the equipment for cooking (electromagnetic induction stoves, kitchen spoons etc.) is modern and clean.
What we both noticed when we were there is that the time flies here. Even though the meal, which we prepared, were not difficult, the two hours just flew away. As I stated, the dishes were not difficult to make although, at first, I thought my sister chose a more time-consuming one (walnut-coated venison with volcano potatoes and pepper sauce), the way our ingredients were prepared made it feel like we are just playing Lego by putting together the pieces. It took around 30 minutes for me to cook my meal (chicken with blue cheese-rosemary tagliatelle) and after I finished, I helped my sister to finish hers as well. It took another 15 minutes to finish that as well and then we both served the dishes (accordingly to the instructions) and then finally, we could taste the masterpieces.
Chicken with blue cheese-rosemary tagliatelle • Walnut-coated venison with volcano potatoes and pepper sauce
Not to compliment ourselves but both dishes were delicious although, without the instructions and the pre-scaled ingredients we could not have made these because the spices used in the restaurant are totally different than those which we usually use (mostly, I do not use rosemary to season a chicken pasta, or thyme to potatoes) so overall the taste was great, and it was worth try these out. And the portions are quite filling – we had to ask for takeaway boxes since we could not finish neither of the meals.
In term of finances, on Makery's website they claim that people do not spend more here than in any ordinary restaurant. For us, the two dishes and four lemonades costed around 12 thousand Forints. I think it is a reasonable price for a restaurant in the city-centre, plus here, you pay for the experience, and it is worth it to reserve a table with some friends or family to have fun and eat something delicious. I would not say that I plan on coming here for every family occasion (birthday dinners, rendezvous, anniversaries etc) but I would like to visit again in some time, because there are plenty of interesting items on their menu.
Honestly, we had a great afternoon at Makery, both of us left the place satisfied and full. I can only recommend the place, the atmosphere is inviting, the interior is stylish, the lights are perfect to make pictures of the finished meals and the staff is friendly. The ingredients are tasty, and they do not spare on the portions. For an open-minded challenger, I recommend visiting this restaurant because the experience is super, the food is great, and the portions are fulling as well.
