Alphonso Davies could not hold back his emotions as he cried tears of joy following Canada's World Cup qualification.

The world's second-biggest nation had not played at football's premier competition since 1986, but Davies and co will join the likes of Brazil, England and Argentina in Qatar in November.

Canada secured eight wins, four draws and suffered just one defeat during their CONCACAF World Cup qualification campaign, and defeated the likes of the United States of America and Mexico in the process.

Dispatching Jamaica 4-0 on Thursday night, it meant they reached the finals for only the second time in their history.

The Canadians ensured their 36-year wait came to an end on home soil. Cyle Larin netted the opener and Tajon Buchanan then doubled the hosts' advantage.

Junior Hoilett's late strike and Adrian Mariappa's own goal confirmed Canada's qualification for Qatar.

Davies, watching on, was absent from the clash due to heart muscle inflammation.

Arguably the best left-back in world football, the Bayern Munich defender could not contain his emotions at full-time.

He burst into tears, saying: "I'm going to the World Cup. We're going to the World Cup, man! I cannot believe it.

"I'm tearing up. My dream has come true."

The former Vancouver Whitecaps man summed up exactly why football is the beautiful game.

Davies previously had Covid-19 and ended up being diagnosed with mild myocarditis in January, putting him out of action.

The 21-year-old is eyeing a return to action both internationally and domestically

On the mend, Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann is hoping he will be fit and available for the Champions League quarter-final against Villarreal.

"I'm happy to be back. The rehab is going well so far," Davies told Bayern's official website.

"I have no problems with my muscles and heart, but I'm not at 100 per cent - yet!

"I'm just happy that I can train again. I'm ready for work."
