Russian president Vladimir Putin appeared to have a moment of shut eye during the Winter Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing.
Putin was in attendance as the 2022 games began in China, despite Russian athletes being barred from representing their country due to doping offences.
Keep politics out of sport? Yeah, good luck with this one...Putin made it to the games despite Russian athletes being unable to represent his countryPutin appeared to take a nap as Ukrainian athletes walked out
Russian competitors are unable to display the country's flag or use the national anthem after the World Anti-Doping Agency discovered widespread breaches across Olympic events.
A number of world leaders from countries such as the United Kingdom, Australia, and the United States are boycotting the games, citing China's persecution of Uighur Muslims in Xinjiang region.
Putin, though, was in the stands at the Bird's Nest National Stadium, despite rising tensions between Russia and Ukraine.
The timing of Putin's apparent nap wasn't ideal either, with it coming as the Ukrainian athletes entered the stadium.
The ceremony saw a live performance with thousands of athletes on display, but zero fans due to COVID-19 rules.
Chinese president Xi Jinping and Putin had earlier signed a joint document, in which Xi appeared to back Russia's military intervention in Ukraine.
The games got underway in the usual spectacular fashionBut the political backdrop has overshadowed the event
"The parties oppose the further expansion of NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organisation), call on the North Atlantic alliance to abandon the ideologised approaches of the cold war, respect the sovereignty, security and interests of other countries, the diversity of their civilisational and cultural-historical patterns, and treat the peaceful development of other states objectively and fairly," the document said.
"China understands and supports the proposals put forward by the Russian Federation on the formation of long-term legally binding security guarantees in Europe."
President Xi received a minute-long round of applause before taking his seat at the opening ceremony, which begins on February 4 and runs until February 22.
