Overview
Inspired by classic action JRPGs, Eternal Radiance is an action role-playing game about a squire named Celeste who begins a journey to prove herself worthy of becoming a true knight. Her quest takes her far from her home, across the continent in pursuit of a thief whose actions stem from a sinister plot.
Gameplay
I find JRPG's immersive and captivating as a general rule and Eternal Radiance seems to follow that trend but with a different twist, the devs have mixed the game mechanics of JRPG game with a visual novel format with the game switching seamlessly between the two.
The cutscenes or introductions take the form of a visual novel that go into alot of the story detail, these can get slightly tedious and you will be tempted to skip but I always feel if you skip these scenes then you'll probably be missing part of the storyline and the game will become more difficult as a consequence so as much as it is tempting to skip you'll be far better using your patience and sitting back admiring the stunning anime style art.
The main story of Eternal Radiance centres around the main character, Celeste, a squire knight of the Ashen Order. She's a fiery and determined young lady although at times loses her focus. After being given her first mission Celeste must go outside of the comfort zone she calls home and learn more of what is around her. She makes some friends along the way and ends up on a quest thar changes her perception of life forever.
Although some aspects of the game were captivating on the other side I found parts of the game repetitive and slightly on the verge of tedious. The combat looks great and plays out with great fluidity giving the player a full on experience partnering the gameplay with stunning visual effects.
The combat itself for me kind of rescued the game with it's simplified mechanics meaning most gamers could probably pick it up even if you're not that experienced in this genre, jumping between the two genres kind of loses the momentum of the gameplay for me however I did enjoy the game as a whole.
Graphics and Sound
The graphics of Eternal Radiance are stunning there's no doubting that, a beautiful anime style cartoon for the visual novel cut scenes and an equally stunning anime style for the standard gameplay. The game worlds are epic in size and look amazing you can tell alot of work has gone into achieving what they have.
The soundtrack is pretty good and kind of goes with the overall theme of the game, in game the effects are pretty good making an overall pleasant experience.
Summary
To summarise my thoughts on Eternal Radiance, I found it an overall decent experience slightly long winded in parts but overall enjoyed the experience. I will admit I preferred the actual gameplay over the visual novel part but I think that would be down to personal choice rather than a problem with the game in general.
Verdict-Out of 5
Good
I give Eternal Radiance a good rating of 3 a good overall game just a bit long winded. If you like visual novels or JRPGs then give this a try.
