Two men have been arrested after Chelsea centre-back Antonio Rudiger became the latest player to be struck by an object thrown by supporters.

The 28-year-old had items thrown towards him by Tottenham fans in the second half of the Blues 2-0 win.

Rudiger was targeted by some Spurs fans in yet more unsavoury scenes in the Premier League

The German star was seen holding up a lighter to referee Paul Tierney.

The Metropolitan Police have issued a statement on the incident.

"Two men have been arrested on suspicion of throwing objects from the stands during the Chelsea versus Tottenham Hotspur match at Stamford Bridge. They have been taken into custody," a spokesperson told Sky Sports News.

"Enquiries, in conjunction with Chelsea FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC, are ongoing to identify anyone else involved in throwing objects during the match."

Thankfully, Rudiger wasn't seriously hurt

The German did not suffer any serious damage but the increase in Premier League fan disorder is alarming.

The weekend also saw former Everton player Lucas Digne struck by a bottle in Aston Villa's win at Goodison Park.

And Rudiger's manager, Thomas Tuchel wants supporters to show respect and proctect the atmosphere of English football.

He said: "I'm not worried, but you are right, I sent the message to our fans – support us, we love to have them close to the pitch, we love a brilliant atmosphere and that they are not behind fences or nets.

The centre-back also has history with Tottenham fans in the past after accusing them of racially abusing him in 2019

"From there everybody needs to show respect. But in general I'm not concerned. Right now I enjoy the atmosphere.

"If this is a new trend we need to act together to make sure that it stops as soon as possible, to protect the fantastic environment and unique atmosphere of England."

And after the incident, Tuchel said: "I just heard about it some minutes ago, but I was not aware of it during the match.

"I thought maybe something was happening with his opponent. I have zero information."

Tottenham boss Antonio Conte also added: "I didn't see what happened, honestly."
