Ever struggled with where to start studying or the most effective way to study? Well here's some study tips that can be used for midterms, SAT's, or just tests in general.
A general test studying tip is to start studying and learning the material early. Before you even are aware of the official test date, you should start learning and reviewing materials. There is so much information on midterms that its crucial to start reviewing notes, worksheets, study guides, old tests and quizzes early. It may not feel like you covered a lot of information the first half of the year but you did, so start reviewing early because the worst thing is going into a test feeling unprepared.
Another great study skill is to create a schedule to help break up the studying. For example, you could have week 1 dedicated to chapter 1 and week 2 dedicated to chapter 2. Not only do you want to create a schedule, but you want to make sure it is a reasonable amount of studying so that you can stick and follow the schedule you created. For example don't say you will do all of chapter 1 tonight and all of chapter 2 tomorrow night. You clearly would not be able to follow that schedule. This helps to keep you on track so that by the time of the test you aren't rushing to study everything you learned from the beginning of the school year to now.
Next, get extra sleep the night before. Eat breakfast the morning of, and of course stay hydrated throughout the day, drinking plenty of water. Also it may help to turn your notes into practice tests and study guides, but if you don't have that much time, you can always use past tests and quizzes.
Some SAT tips: you can link the PSAT scores with Khan Academy online. Khan Academy is a free website full of good educational tools that can be used for studying or tutoring if you're struggling. This will give you study sessions that are based on what you need help with. They are created by what you struggled with most on the PSAT's. The last few tips apply to taking SAT's: drink lots of water, bring an extra pencil, snack, and calculator, get lots of sleep the night before, and definitely make sure to eat breakfast that morning because it is a longer test.
Everyone has different ways that work for them. I asked some OAHS students how they study for tests.
The first student replied with "I read the textbook, rewrite my notes, and make flash cards".
The next student says "I think of similar words that have to do with what I'm remembering so basically sometimes I come up with a rhyme and sometimes it's just 2 words that are similar. Other than that if it's vocabulary then I like to remember only a few words or the general idea for the definition."
The last student I asked said "I study by looking over my notes, looking at my textbook, and I usaully look at my past assignments to try and help as well. I also make flash cards."
You can use your notes, flash cards, the textbook, Khan Academy, or none of those. There are many different ways to study, these are just a few that can be used for midterms, SAT's, or testing in general.
