The Premier League trophy was paraded on the pitch before the top of the table clash between Man City and Chelsea Saturday lunchtime. Come the end of the game there were plenty suggesting that they might as well just leave it there.

After all, the title was now all over, wasn't it? The moment that the Man of the Match -  former dark blue turned light blue Kevin De Bruyne - waved his magic wand at the edge of the Chelsea 18-yard box and won the game for City.

De Bruyne bagged a wondergoal to secure the three points

Which at least means we can all now just get on with our lives, doesn't it? You know, stop watching all those 'meaningless' games, and start doing all that other, more important stuff.

No, I don't know what that might be? And furthermore, no, I don't think I'll stop watching, either. Because in spite of the fact that there are those who bemoan a Premier League where the title has become a foregone conclusion already.

The simple truth remains, we don't watch tables, we watch teams playing football. Meaning that, as a result, the table will then look after itself.

So why isn't it all about being Number 1? Well, first of all, we watch our own clubs. Because we want to cheer and smile. Even if sometimes we moan and frown. That's the way it goes. And that's what being a supporter is.

Then, of course, we watch other teams, because we love the game. For the sake of it. For the wonder goal, filthy tackle, brilliant save and glaring miss. That's what being a fan is.

We also watch it for the hope. Because even if the top slot has gone, there's European places to push for, relegation slots to avoid, bragging rights to be had. All of which can be affected by that team losing confidence, or that other team pulling off a win against all the odds. That's what being an optimist is.

The victory has given City a 13-point lead

City fans are poised to celebrate another title

On Saturday against Chelsea, Man City may well have secured the title. In style, I might add. But that won't stop us paying to go through the turnstiles. Or remaining glued to our radios and TVs when there's a game on.

After all, if it was all about the title, how many people would have ever bothered to go and see The Matrix?

'The Mattress?'

'No, The Matrix. It means a square made up from a load of numbers'

'Does it? So what time's The Mattress on?'

Chelsea fans have enjoyed European success
