According to Variety, Ubisoft is developing a virtual reality game in which players take on the role of employees of the Parisian fire department battling the blaze that severely damaged Notre-Dame de Paris cathedral in 2019.
The one-hour experience is being produced in collaboration with the docudrama Notre-Dame on Fire, directed by Jean-Jacques Annaud (Enemy at the Gates, The Name of the Rose).
"Like any escape game, it's a question of puzzles and co-operating with your teammates," Deborah Papiernik, senior VP of new business and strategic alliances at Ubisoft, told Variety. "The idea is to make your way through the cathedral to find relics and to fight the fire because you have to save Notre Dame [before the clock runs out]."
The 2019 fire lasted about 15 hours and caused the collapse of the cathedral's main spire as well as the ruin of much of the roof. The towers, on the other hand, were salvaged. Work on the cathedral is still underway, and it isn't expected to reopen until 2024.
For Assassin's Creed Unity, Ubisoft created a precise 3D model of Notre Dame, which was then utilized to create the free virtual reality experience Notre-Dame de Paris: Journey Back in Time. Both the film and the virtual reality game, Notre Dame on Fire, will be released in March. It is yet to be revealed which hardware it will be compatible with.
