Liverpool are set to hijack Tottenham's move for highly-rated Porto forward Luis Diaz before the January transfer window shuts.

Spurs are thought to have tabled a £37million offer for the Colombia star, but now their Premier League rivals are set to swoop in.

Diaz is one of the most highly-rated players in Portugal

The Atheltic claims Liverpool are close to agreeing a £49.9m deal, plus add-ons, after the 25-year-old leaned towards them over Tottenham.

Diaz has 14 goals in 18 Primeira Liga matches this season, his contract still has two-and-a-half years to run, and his release clause is fixed at £66m.

Porto are fierce negotiators, but the Portuguese giants are thought to be willing to let the forward leave for less than £66m this month.

The news will cause yet more frustration for Tottenham, who have also missed out on Barcelona-bound Wolves star Adama Traore.

Diaz has been on fire for Porto this season

Reacting to the Spurs links earlier this week, talkSPORT's European football journalist Lars Siversten said Diaz could easily slot into Jurgen Klopp's Liverpool side.

"He's a quick winger," the pundit said. "He's one of these modern wide forwards who likes to come inside and have a shot.

"I honestly had him pegged in my head as someone who would turn up at Liverpool when they start looking for long-term replacements for Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah.

"He's that sort of Jurgen Klopp, runs around a lot, speedy inside forward. I thought he'd be well-suited to them."
