The semiconductor shortage has hit the automotive industry particularly hard. Semiconductors are used in everything from audio, and engine management, to unlocking doors and smart cruise control.
The UK has seen a sharp decline in the factories making engines, with 132,555 units for November, down a huge 30.2%.
Production for both domestic and export markets falls by -22.4% and -35.2% respectively.
Year-to-date engine output down -9.5% to 1,539,786 units compared to a weak 2020 and -36.3% below the five-year average.
Buyers world-wide have already experienced long delays on the delivery of their new cars, with the price of 2nd hand cars skyrocketing in response.
