According to a recent report, Activision-Blizzard is planning on eliminating the competitive balance tax and the soft player salary caps for the Overwatch League and the Call of Duty League. This information was first reported by the Sports Business Journal and later confirmed by Dot Esports.

According to the Sports Business Journal, this decision was likely made after the U.S. Department of Justice's antitrust division completed an investigation into the OWL's soft cap. The government accused the OWL of violating the 1890 Sherman Antitrust Act because league players were not legally protected nor given the bargaining power of a players union.

"We have received an inquiry from the Department of Justice and are cooperating accordingly," an Activision-Blizzard spokesperson said. "We deliver epic entertainment to our fans and support our players and teams in producing the most competitive and enjoyable esports leagues in the world."

The task force assembled by the DOJ aims to punish Overwatch League and Call of Duty League teams that spend above a certain amount on their roster each year. According to league sources, the 2020 soft salary cap was roughly $1.6 million.
