The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.
Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual "spills" do occur among the 24,000-plus wells in the county.
» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Oct. 29 a historical tank battery spill near Essex Road and Beebe Draw Farms Parkway, about 5 miles southeast of Gilcrest. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical soil impacts were found below the former partially buried produced water vessel during decommissioning. Excavation and assessment are ongoing.
» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Oct. 28 a historical well spill near Weld 32 and 17, about 3 miles west of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical impacts were found after cut and cap operations at the wellhead.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Oct. 28 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 34 and 53, about 8 miles southeast of LaSalle. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated the release at the decommissioned tank battery. Soil samples exceeded COGCC standards.
» BONANZA CREEK ENERGY OPERATING COMPANY LLC reported Oct. 27 a historical tank battery spill about 3 miles northeast of Weld 50 and 69, about 9 miles east of Kersey. Between 1 and 5 barrels of oil spilled. Historical soil impacts were found during decommissioning site assessment. Delineation is underway. Soil samples will be collected and analyzed.
» DCP OPERATING COMPANY LP reported Oct. 26 a recent gas gathering pipeline system spill near Weld 74 and 69, about 8 miles southeast of Galeton. An unknown amount of condensate spilled. The operator found a pinhole condensate leak on the gathering line due to the pipe's internal integrity, after receiving notification of a potential spill. The valve was immediately shut, and the line was shut in and blown down. The damaged portion was removed and replaced. Impacted soil was removed, and lab samples were collected for analysis.
» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported Oct. 26 a historical well spill near Weld 30.5 and 23.25, west of Platteville. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Historical soil impacts were found during plugging and abandonment. Assessment is ongoing.
» TINDALL OPERATING COMPANY reported Oct. 26 a historical pit spill near Weld 80 and 121, about 4 miles southwest of Raymer. About 329.29 tons of impacted soil was hauled to a landfill. During investigation for a permitted pit closure from a plugged and abandoned well, impacted soil was found. Excavation was performed until clean soil was found. Samples were collected for lab analysis.
» HIGHPOINT OPERATING CORPORATION reported Oct. 26 a recent tank battery spill near Weld 128 and 75, about 5 miles southwest of Hereford. About 2.5 barrels of produced water spilled. A third-party water hauler was offloading water to the production tanks when a compromised valve released the produced water outside containment. The release was contained to the plated pad surface. Impacted soil will be removed, and confirmation samples will be collected and analyzed.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported Oct. 26 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 50 and 59, about 3 miles southeast of Kersey. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. The spill was found during reclamation. Lab analysis is pending.
» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported Oct. 25 a historical pipeline spill near Peregrine Road and Kestrel Road in Dacono. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. The operator found historical contamination at a depth of 8 feet, after a nonreportable spill of 15 gallons.
