so i started watching the sopranos in july and then i took a break for a few months and finally finished seasons 4-6B within 2 weeks. The show is INCREDIBLE. In the beginning the mother ( Nancy Marchand) puts on an amazing performance. personally she annoyed me to no end, but she did her job as Tony Sopranos, mother. They portray her as having BPD and not loving her children. The whole soprano family dynamic is too complex to explain in this post. In particular I want to talk about the final episode of The Sopranos, Season 6B episode 9. There's a lot of controversy about what exactly is happening in this episode. I was very confused and almost angry after the episode ended. I decided to go back and watch season 1, episode 1. And honestly I think I've cracked a code on why the last episode was so strange ? I'm not even sure if strange is the word though. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts and ideas on what I have been thinking about.
SO. Season 1 episode 1, some things i noticed is that tonys voice/accent isn't as hard in the beginning of the show, as it gets by the end of the last seasons. You can audibally tell that as the show progresses thru seasons, he gets more aggressive when he talks + his italian accent gets thicker. Whether this be because of the confidence he gained slowly while the show gained a fan base, or if it was due to him getting extremely drunk on set.... it's something to note. His wife (Carmela) however, keeps the same tone and accent throughout the show. Something else I don't know if it relates... but in the first episode in season 1 Tony is obsessed with the ducks in his pool.In the very last episode of the show, Paulie is obsessed with this cat and says its bad luck. Tony shows a subliminal love for this cat and refuses to let paulie kill it or even let it lose in the wild. I can't tell if that's connected or not… In the very first season Tony refuses to let anyone harm the ducks… and his family is highly weirded out when he goes and swims with them in the pool. Also in the first episode, Meadow (the daughter) and her mom are in a pretty brutal-teenage- attitude fight. She's hanging out with her friend that randomly appears in the last episode of the 6b season. What I'm getting at here is that I think the very last episode of season 6b was designed to sort of be like the very first episode in season 1. The thing that really tied that together for me is Tony and his Uncle juniors conversations in those 2 episodes I'm comparing. In season 1 ep. 2, Junior jokes to Tony and says "And to think of all the time I wasted playing catch with you" In the last episode of 6b Tony finally goes to see his uncle junior (he hadn't seen him since junior SHOT him) And the first thing junior says is, "Hey I remember you. We used to play catch." Junior has like altschmerz or something, but I think that the writers did that little line on purpose to connect it to episode 1. I've also read some things claiming that Tony died in the beginning of the last episode. The theory is that when he wakes up he's actually dreaming? So the whole episode is just a dream of Tony's. The show does periodically talk about Tony's dreams…. I just don't know. This show is a SOLID 10/10 I suggest everyone watch.
