According to an analysis from The Wall Street Journal, Apple earned $8.5 billion during the 2019 fiscal year, which was more than Microsoft, Nintendo, and Sony generated during the same period. Sensor Tower estimates that Apple received $15.9 billion from the App Store from October 2018 to September 2019. The organization believes that 69% of those revenues came from gaming apps. During the trial between Apple and Epic Games, Tim Cook revealed mobile games make up a majority of the money spent on the Apple App Store. In 2020, Sensor Tower reported $45 billion was spent on mobile games offered through the App Store. Tim Sweeney from Epic says this headline does a disservice to Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft because Apple doesn't actually MAKE games, so, technically, this is not gaming revenue. Who cares about the classification though? These headlines are good for the industry. If you think Apple is an organization that's not a gaming company, that simply profits from gaming, then, technically, GameStop isn't a gaming company. Rather, they're a gaming retailer. Apple is entering the gaming mix and generating billions of dollars. How is this not good for the gaming industry? I have always believed the iPad is the pinnacle of gaming hardware if you play mobile. I was the one who said Apple should buy GameStop and turn them into real-world apple arcades with games you can play on iPads. (All information was provided by GamesIndustry.biz) |
