Police booked at 15-year-old driver into youth corrections after they say he crashed a stolen vehicle Monday morning in Greeley.

About 10:45 a.m., Greeley detectives were following a stolen vehicle with a tracker installed by the owner. Detectives tried to stop the vehicle, which was occupied by a 15-year-old juvenile driver and 22-year-old passenger Mark Powers.

The driver drove off at a high rate of speed, according to Greeley police, and police did not pursue the vehicle.

The juvenile failed to make a turn at the intersection of 23rd Avenue and 22nd Street, police reported. As a result, the vehicle struck a fire hydrant and went airborne before sliding to a halt on its roof.

Both occupants of the stolen vehicle fled the crash by foot, according to police. They were quickly detained by officers responding to the scene.

The juvenile driver was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries from the crash. He was later booked into the Platte Valley Youth Services Center.

Powers was released from the scene with a summons from an unrelated case.
