On October 7th, Electronic Arts Inc. unveiled the launch numbers for the company's recently released soccer video game FIFA 22. In this record-breaking announcement, it was revealed that over 9.1 million players had acquired the game resulting in over 460 million matches being played around the world.

"It's been an exciting couple of weeks for EA SPORTS, as we officially launched FIFA 22," the company said in a press release. "We're very proud of this year's game, and love seeing the excitement from players around the world as you get into the experience... We will continue delivering amazing experiences throughout this season, but first - a heartfelt thank you to our incredible community of football fans."

Despite the game's global success, EA said it is considering rebranding the video game series. Furthermore, the company explained that it is currently reviewing its licensing agreement with FIFA.

In a statement, EA did say it could cut ties with FIFA and rename the franchise. However, the organization would retain all of its other league, player, and stadium rights because those came from agreements outside of the soccer governing body.

Shortly after this announcement, EA Sports filed a licensing trademark for EA Sports FC in the U.K. and Europe. This information was first reported by Polygon.

The Profit's Take:

It's a little weird. I think it's fascinating because I know that a good amount of people would NOT buy this game if it didn't come with the FIFA licensing. Strange of them to make this announcement after a record-breaking launch.
