An unnamed donor is willing to give a half-million dollars to Logan County to improve the county's Event Center at the Logan County Fairgrounds.

The Board of Commissioners met Tuesday with a representative of the donor, who asked to remain anonymous for the time being, to discuss two possible plans for the funds. Commissioner Jane Bauder said the first preference would be to build a 2,000-square-foot addition on the Event Center's southwest side. The addition would have access to the center's existing kitchen and restrooms.

If such an addition cannot be built for $500,000, the funds would be used to improve the existing facility, such as adding a removeable dance floor, heating and air conditioning, and other upgrades.

Bauder said the reason for the improvement is to make the facility useful for uses that aren't compatible with the arena's sandy soil.

"People would like to have wedding receptions and other things at the fairgrounds, but they want something besides a dirt floor," Bauder said. She added that the Gary DeSoto Building at the fairgrounds isn't big enough for a 300-person event.

Bauder said her next step will be to get bids or estimates from area builders.

During the commissioners' regular meeting the board indefinitely postponed a proposed ordinance on engine compression brake mufflers. The board had been considering the ordinance until it was discovered there already is a state statute covering the devices. The indefinite postponement essentially kills the bill.

In other business the commissioners:

Appointed Emily Parry as horse events coordinator and Colby walker as youth rodeo coordinator on the Logan County Fair Board;

Approved resolutions establishing emergency reserve funds for the county's annual budget and the pest control district's annual budget;

Approved final plat for the Bauder Minor Subdivision at the intersection of County Roads 24 and 31 southwest of Sterling; Commissioner Bauder noted that she is not related to the owner, Mark Bauder;

Approved a right-of-way permit for Xcel Energy along County Road 72 for electrical distribution lines;

Approved a right-of-way permit for Robert Lingreen across County Road 31 for a water and electrical line.
