Canelo Alvarez has rolled his eyes at a call-out from UFC pound-for-pound king Kamaru Usman.

The UFC welterweight champion defends his title against Colby Covington this Saturday night in New York, while Canelo faces Caleb Plant for undisputed super-middleweight glory in Las Vegas.

Both men are currently considered the very best, pound-for-pound, in their respective sports.

As such, Usman this week suggested a crossover bout between them - akin to Conor McGregor's boxing match with Floyd Mayweather in 2017.

"It only makes sense because we're in an era to where people want to be entertained," Usman told DAZN.

"So, in order to entertain people, when have we in history ever seen the two pound-for-pound fighters in the world in combat sports at the top of their prime, when have we ever seen them compete?

"It never happened."

"Either man waits for the other one to get old," Usman added, "It's rarely ever really happened.

"But it's either that both are out of their prime, both are old… it's never been done.

"In order for us to do that, this will be the greatest, the biggest event ever.

"The two pound-for-pound fighters in combat sports at the top of their prime to get in there and duke it out, I believe will be probably the biggest event ever."

Canelo rolled his eyes at the question about Usman and dismissed his call-out

Following his fight week press conference with Plant, Canelo had the opportunity to respond to these remarks.

Back in May, when called out by Demetrius Andrade, the Mexican went viral for singing, 'Payday, payday, you want payday,' at the American in a mocking response.

When asked for his thoughts on Usman's call-out, Canelo referenced this and mocked Usman as he replied: "Payday, payday."
