A Denver man faces almost a century in prison after he was convicted of stealing two rental cars and robbing two banks at gun point in the summer of 2018.
A Weld County jury convicted 58-year-old Billy Ray Hendrix last week of –– two counts of aggravated robbery, six counts of felony menacing with a deadly weapon, two counts of theft and two counts of motor vehicle theft, the Weld County District Attorney's Office announced in a news release.
The case dates back to June 2018 when Hendrix stole a 2017 Hyundai Accent from Enterprise Rent-A-Car at Denver International Airport.
The 58-year-old man used the stolen vehicle to rob the 1st Bank branch at 1779 CO-7 in Erie at gunpoint. To hide his identity, Hendrix used a Biore face mask during the robbery, according to the release.
After the first armed robbery, he abandoned the car at the Orchard Towne Center in Westminster. Detectives found the vehicle and pieces of the Biore face mask inside, which was submitted for DNA analysis to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation.
The next month, Hendrix returned to Enterprise Rent-A-Car at DIA to steal another vehicle. At the airport's exit gate, the rear tires of the vehicle were punctured by the spike strip.
Hendrix continued driving for about a mile on the road before abandoning the vehicle. He used his own silver sedan to complete another armed robbery at the TBK Bank in La Salle.
The detectives on this case were able to identify Hendrix through a DNA hit they received from face mask. In addition, Hendrix's wore the same shirt, beanie and glasses during the robberies in Erie and La Salle.
A judge will determine if Hendrix is convicted of one count of a habitual offender charge next month, the DA's office said. If he is convicted, he faces 96 years in the Colorado Department of Corrections
The hearing is 8:30 a.m. Dec. 22.
Deputy District Attorney Patrick Roche and Chief Deputy District Attorney Michael Pirraglia are prosecuting this case.
