For PHANTOM, the brand collaborated with IFF-LMR Naturals, a pioneering company founded in 1983, whose guiding principle has always been to deliver premium 100% natural extracts, with a strict ethos of complete transparency, commitment to environmental management and sustainable development. Our patchouli sourced from Indonesia, then re-distilled in Grasse. Our vetiver from Haiti is certified "For Life", a global standard for ethically sourced, ecofriendly, socially responsible ingredients. Our lavender blends a lavandin heart crafted in Grasse exclusively for Paco Rabanne, sustainable lavender oil, and organic lavandin absolute enfleurage 2.0, an extraction technique born in Grasse in the late 18th century, rebooted for the 21st century. Paco Rabanne's team developed PHANTOM with the perfumers, scientists and technicians of International Flavors and Fragrances (IFF), using the company's state-of-the-art Augmented Creativity process. What is Augmented Creativity? With PHANTOM, every aspect of perfume creation has been reinvented by next-generation technologies developed for IFF. Thanks to neurosciences, algorithmic tools, and artificial intelligence, our perfumers have been able to push back their creative boundaries. How do you use neurosciences in perfumery? IFF's Science of Wellness™ program combines artificial intelligence and neuroscientific approaches that enable us to quantify the emotional benefits elicited by ingredients, or combinations of ingredients. We identify which parts of the brain are activated when you smell them. What does that tell you? We know which part of the brain are associated with specific emotions. Now we can scientifically demonstrate how perfume acts on our feelings. Based on our findings, a dedicated algorithm analyzes the formulas of the fragrances we tested. This allows us to identify which ingredient, or combination of ingredients, produces a specific emotional effect. Was PHANTOM tested with this process? The fragrance was tested on young men aged 18-35 to find out which emotions it aroused in the brain. We took 45 million measures on their brains and discovered that PHANTOM elicited three feel-good emotions: sexiness, self-confidence, and energy. What was the role of A.I. in developing the fragrance? Was PHANTOM created by a computer? Absolutely not! IFF's advanced artificial intelligence tool is there to boost our perfumers' creativity and explore disruption. Perfumers enter the formulas they are working on, and the algorithm suggests novel combinations or dosages that will intensify the desired emotion effects. So how were these findings applied to PHANTOM? Our perfumer Loc Dong had a crazy idea: he wanted to use an overdose of a vintage molecule called styrallyl acetate to create a futuristic aromatic fragrance. Our A.I. program spurred him to use ten times the usual amount in modern perfumes! It was the optimum (over)dose to create feel-good alertness. Combined with our creamy Lavender 3.0 for addictive sexiness, our team created the aromatic of the future!
