Bluepoint Games—the studio behind the Shadow of the Colossus and Demon's Souls remakes—is the latest studio bought by Sony to create original and exclusive games for the PlayStation 5.

In an IGN report, studio president Marco Thrush said that the acquisition is the "next step in evolution" for the studio while declining to provide more details. In addition, Bluepoint Games has not yet confirmed whether it will continue making remakes or move its focus toward creating original games.

The Austin-based game studio has mainly worked on remasters, anthologies and remakes. In the 15 years since its founding, Bluepoint Games has released the God of War Collection on PlayStation 3 in 2009 and developed 2011's Metal Gear Solid HD Collection for Konami, as well as ported Titanfall to Xbox 360 for Electronic Arts in 2014.

The studio has also released Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection, which includes the first three games in that PlayStation-exclusive series, in 2015 and Shadow of the Colossus in 2018. For the PlayStation 5 launch, it released a remake of FromSoftware's 2009 RPG Demon's Souls, which has sold over 1.4 million copies as of last month.

"PlayStation has such an iconic gaming catalog and for us there's been nothing better than to bring some of gaming's masterpieces to new players," Thrush added in a PlayStation blog. "Becoming a part of PlayStation Studios empowers our team to raise the quality bar even further and create even more impactful experiences for the PlayStation community."

Bluepoint Games is Sony's fifth high-profile acquisition in the past six months. In March, the company bought the Evolution Championship Series and created a joint venture to operate its events. In June, Sony announced that it had bought Housemarque, the studio that produced the Returnal and Resogun games, with Nixes Software—a developer for PC ports—following soon after. Just last month, Sony also announced that it acquired The Playroom developer Firesprite. (Read: 25 new PlayStation 5 games in the works from PlayStation Studios)
