I first read the book The Outsiders by SE Hinton, it was instantly one of my favorite books I had ever read. To this day, this book is still my favorite. When I first found out that there was a movie made based on the book. Then, I looked at who was acting in the movie and I was like SIGN ME UP! I mean let's be real, a teenaged Tom Cruise, Patrick Swayze in his prime years, and Rob Lowe. Just like the actors the movie blew me away too when I saw it. It's a classic Poor vs. Rich brawling movie but in the 60s in Tulsa Oklahoma, the "Greasers" vs the "Socials". The Greasers are classified as the working class and typical poor people who live on the wrong side of the tracks, literally. The Socials aka the "Socs" are typically portrayed as the rich upper class people and live on the right side of the tracks. This Greaser verses Socials mentality is what gets many of the kids in this movie in trouble. Money is a funny thing, and in this movies it seems to be a common theme because money gets you things. Things like clothes, food, vehicles, social status, etc. However, if you just so happen to be a Greaser you don't have the money for those things which automatically makes you less then a Social in this movie. This divide makes the Greasers and the Socials hate eachother. They are divided in almost every single aspect, except one.
The place they all wanted to be on a Saturday night, The Drive In. Whats better then some popcorn and a couple of Cokes, watching a movie with yours bros or girlfriend am i right? But the divide still even caught them there one night when a Greaser saw one of his girl friends from school being treated poorly by her Soc boyfriend and he stepped in to intervene which essentially started a gang war between the two groups. Luckily, the fight that happened at the Drive In didn't escalate two bad before it got broken up, it was what happened to the main characters Ponyboy and Johnny on the way home from the movie that shocked many of the viewers watching including myself. The Socs that Ponyboy got into an argument with at the drive in followed him and johnny on the way home and jumped them. And it ended with Johnny killing a Soc. And then it just kept getting better. This is my favorite movie and has been since I was 13.
