The NHL announced today that Montreal Canadiens goaltender Carey Price will be voluntarily leaving the team as he will be entering the NHL/NHLPA player assistance program.

Carey Price Entering Player Assistance Program

No further details were given by the NHL in their press release this morning. And it is hard to speculate what Carey Price is going through right now. That would not be right given the day and age. However, this is a big step for any player to take asking for assistance. One has to wonder though if this has to do with Robin Lehner being so vocal on Twitter about teams giving players pain medication without a prescription. Lehner did talk with the NHL and NHLPA about the matter and was encouraged about the situation moving forward.

Price has been away from the team in recent days with what the team called a non-COVID illness. Even though he was going to miss the start of the season, Price was able to start training with the team on Monday. Price has been recovering from off-season knee surgery. Speaking with the media this morning, general manager Marc Bergevin said Price will be out a minimum of 30 days and it could be longer.

Earlier in the week, the Canadiens claimed goaltender Sam Montembeault off waivers. He will serve as the backup to Jake Allen. The Canadiens were already dealing with the loss of Shea Weber for the year and now possibly Carey Price. Not to mention all the other injuries. It will be an uphill climb in that division for sure as the Canadiens look to Build upon their trip to the Stanley Cup Final from a year ago. But that is the last thing on everyone's mind right now.
