Edinson Cavani should try and leave Manchester United in January following the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo, insists ex-Uruguay star Gus Poyet.

Ronaldo's return to Old Trafford has seen Cavani's game time restricted to just 115 minutes of Premier League football so far this season.

Cavani has found himself surplus to requirements

Ronaldo is a hard man to displace

Not only did the five-time Ballon d'Or winner take the Uruguay striker's place in the squad, Ronaldo also took Cavani's No. 7 shirt.

Despite an impressive return of 17 goals in 32 games for the Red Devils last season, Cavani looks set to play second-fiddle this campaign.

Former Chelsea and Tottenham midfielder Poyet suggests the 34-year-old might be wise to move on, with the situation at Old Trafford affecting his international career.

"He was unlucky, because without Ronaldo coming in, he was playing as the main striker," Poyet told talkSPORT.

The former PSG star isn't starting games for Uruguay either

"The decision of Juventus, Man City getting involved, incredibly went against one person especially - and that was Cavani.

"Maybe he should move in January. From the outside, I don't know him, but if I was him, seeing how things are now, and seeing him not getting to 90 minutes for the national team because he's not playing - maybe."

Cavani was benched for both of Uruguay's recent World Cup qualifiers, against Colombia and Argentina.

He was handed a rare start by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer for the most recent Premier League clash, a 1-1 draw with Everton, but was replaced by Ronaldo in the second-half.

Solskjaer relied on Cavani last season

Cavani recently said: "In football, you have to always be ready. It's one of the keys at the top level.

"Sometimes you play more, sometimes you play less, managers make decisions, but that doesn't stop the work to always be competitive.

"The league has just started and I have needed to be, not quite like last year, but I'm there to be a part of it."
