It didn't take long for Sterling softball to stamp its name into the record books of Colorado's top Class 3A teams,
While the Tigers entered week one with a CHSAANow.com preseason ranking at No. 10, the Tigers have surely and steadily dropped that ranking down to No. 4 this week. They've relied on their stellar offense to boost them to a 7-2 record through Tuesday.
Their only two losses of the season came in their first contest against Class 4A's 10th-ranked Roosevelt and Nebraska's Scottsbluff team. They earned an impressive win over 3A's third-ranked Eaton, who the Tigers took down in a 7-1 decision.
To date, the Tigers have scored 71 runs on 85 hits as senior Jenna Gordon leads her team with 13 RBIs on as many hits. Aubry Wright, another senior, has secured 10 RBIs on 18 hits and has scored 13 herself. Junior Reagan Fehringer has dominated on the mound, striking out 80 batters and giving up just 11 earned runs and nine walks through 54 innings pitched.
Sterling currently sits atop the 3A Patriot League standings, but that achievement could soon be put in jeopardy. The Tigers host University next, who is also 7-2 and undefeated through league play. The Bulldogs have also relied on a strong offense with 90 runs scored through nine games. First pitch is set for Thursday at 4 p.m.
