Manchester United have confirmed Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the famous No.7 shirt for the club this season.

The Portuguese forward famously wore the same number during his first spell at the club and the Red Devils have revealed that he will be donning it again.

Cristiano Ronaldo will wear the No.7 shirt once again

After Ronaldo left United for Real Madrid in 2009, many players have worn the No.7 shirt, but none of them have lived up to his name.

The most recent of those was Edinson Cavani, who fared better than most of his predecessors while wearing the number, scoring 17 goals last season.

Many questioned whether United would be able to swap the Uruguyan's number, with Premier League rules stating that a player must wear the same shirt number for the whole season.

However, after United received special dispensation for Ronaldo to take the No.7, Cavani will now take the No.21 shirt after Daniel James' move to Leeds United.

Ronaldo was very close to be playing in sky blue rather than red

United paid Juventus an initial £12.8m for Ronaldo, and there is also potentially £6.8m in add-ons, which is payable over five years.

On his return to the club, the 36-year-old said: "Manchester United is a club that has always had a special place in my heart, and I have been overwhelmed by all the messages I have received since the announcement on Friday.

"I cannot wait to play at Old Trafford in front of a full stadium and see all the fans again. I'm looking forward to joining up with the team after the international games, and I hope we have a very successful season ahead."
