Kyle Freeland pitched an absolute gem for his final home start of a lost Rockies season.
Colorado snapped its five-game losing streak at Coors Field on Tuesday in a 3-1 victory over the Nationals. Freeland held Washington scoreless into the seventh — throwing strikes on 62-of-91 pitches — before he walked in his lone earned run of the night.
Trevor Story blasted a 475-foot solo homer in the fifth to help bring Colorado's offense to life.
The Rockies (72-85) close out their final homestand of the season Wednesday against the Nationals with an opportunity to clinch their three-game series.
Freeland shut the Nationals down on Tuesday with soft contact — 15 forced ground/fly balls — and consistently worked out of early-inning traffic. Then Freeland retired the Nationals in order on just 11 pitches in the fifth. But trouble arrived with two outs in the seventh when Freeland loaded the bases and walked home Yadiel Hernandez.
Washington trailed 2-1 when the Rockies turned to their bullpen. Freeland ended his night with one earned run on six hits, plus three strikeouts and four walks.
"He pitched outstanding," manager Bud Black said. "His stuff was crisp. … One of his better games this year with fastball usage, especially inside, to both left and right-handed hitters. That was the key of the game tonight with Kyle."
Freeland added: "(The Nationals) are a team that swings a lot and they hack early. So, you've got to be a little bit precise with your location early in counts. … I located my pitches the best that I could, get that ball on the ground, and allowed our infield to work and get those double plays."
Colorado's offense stepped up to provide a cushion in the seventh when Raimel Tapia's leadoff triple got rewarded with a Brendan Rodgers RBI double. Neither team generated offense until the fourth inning when a Ryan McMahon RBI double off Nationals' starting lefty Patrick Corbin scored C.J. Cron.
Story notched his 24th home run of the season. He discussed the emotion behind that deep shot to center knowing that Wednesday might be his final home game with the Rockies.
"That was a good one to happen tonight … with the possibility of tomorrow being my last game (at Coors Field)," Story said. "In case it is, we're going to relish in the moment a little bit. Hopefully, find a good way to thank the fans and do that — if it is the last time."
The Rockies bullpen combination of Tyler Kinley and Jordan Sheffield held Washington in check. Carlos Estevez earned the save for Colorado with a scoreless ninth inning.
