Windsor Lake was open to the public Monday after the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment cleared the Town of Windsor to reopen the lake Friday.

On July 19, the town suspected presence of harmful cyanobacteria in the water, and issued a precautionary advisory to lake visitors, according to Monday's news release from the town. Lake water sample evaluations determined blue-green algae was in the lake, which led to the closure to the public on July 23.

Windsor's Parks, Recreation & Culture Department will return to normal operating hours for Windsor Lake, according to the release. Boat rentals are available 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Tuesday and on weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. through September 19.

Kendra Martin, the Parks, Recreation and Culture operations and facilities manager said in the release that the CDPHE requires two consecutive test results to allow for a reopen. And she said they submitted a third sample as a safety precaution.

"While we take extra precautionary steps, it is important to remember that Windsor Lake also serves as an irrigation lake, and with every outdoor body of water comes uncontrolled natural hazards," she said in the release. "Therefore, we encourage people to swim at their own risk."

Algae precautionary signs will remain posted and the water conditions will continue to be monitored over the next couple days, according to the town.
