The following spills were reported to the Colorado Oil and Gas Conservation Commission in the past two weeks.
Information is based on Form 19, which operators must fill out detailing the leakage/spill events. Any spill release that may impact waters of the state must be reported as soon as practical. Spills and leaks typically are found during routine maintenance on existing wells, though some actual "spills" do occur among the 24,000-plus wells in the county.
» DCP OPERATING COMPANY LP reported Aug. 2 a recent gas-gathering pipeline system spill near Weld 38 and 19, southwest of Milliken. Less than a barrel of condensate spilled. During the removal of a metering shed, personnel noticed stained material and found a minor spill. Within a couple hours of discovery, the operator initiated cleanup and all impacted soils were removed.
» KP KAUFFMAN COMPANY INC reported July 30 a recent off-location flowline spill near Weld 12 and 21, about 2 miles southwest of Fort Lupton. Less than a barrel each of oil and produced water spilled. The associated wells were shut in immediately after notification of the release. A hydrovac removed product from the surface, and excavation equipment was brought in to remove surface impacts.
» KERR MCGEE OIL & GAS ONSHORE LP reported July 28 a historical well site spill near Weld 38 and 23, in Milliken. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Impacts were found during plugging and abandonment. Assessment is ongoing.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported July 28 a historical tank battery spill near East 8th Street and Weld County Parkway, in Greeley. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a release at the decommissioned tank battery. One soil sample exceeded groundwater protection levels for 1,2,4-trimethylbenzene and 1,3,5-trimethylbenzene.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported July 28 a historical tank battery spill about 3 miles north of Weld 20 and 59, about 4 miles north of Keenesburg. An unknown amount of oil and condensate spilled. Lab analysis indicated a release at the decommissioned tank battery. Total petroleum hydrocarbons exceeded COGCC standards in one soil sample.
» DCP OPERATING COMPANY LP reported July 27 a historical gas-gathering pipeline system spill near Weld 6 and 55, about 5 miles southeast of Hudson. An unknown amount of condensate spilled. Distressed vegetation and photoionization detector readings indicated a potential spill. The operator is planning excavation and further assessment.
» HIGHPOINT OPERATING CORPORATION reported July 27 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 68 and 83, about 10 miles south of Briggsdale. An unknown amount of oil spilled. A hole in the liner of the production tank containment was found, with historically impacted soil beneath the liner. Assessment is ongoing.
» BONANZA CREEK ENERGY OPERATING COMPANY LLC reported July 25 a recent tank battery spill about 3 miles east of Weld 50 and 69, about 2.5 miles northwest of Dearfield. About 10 gallons of oil spilled. A fitting on a compressor misted the oil across the well pad and the access road. The impacted soil will be removed, and analysis will be conducted.
» NOBLE ENERGY INC reported July 21 a historical tank battery spill near Weld 40 and 45, about 7 miles east of Gilcrest. An unknown amount of oil, condensate and produced water spilled. Lab analysis indicated a historical release during reclamation at the tank battery. Soil samples exceeded COGCC standards. Assessment is ongoing.
» PDC ENERGY INC reported July 9 a historical production facility spill near Weld 54 and Colo. 257, in Greeley. An unknown amount of oil and produced water spilled. During abandonment of the production facility, the spill was found near the water vault.
